Mannerism, from the Italian “maniera”, meaning style. The mannerist style lavishes attention on stylization and superficial elements of appearance rather than profound meaning. Mannerist works are compositionally complex with exotic poses and elongated, contorted bodies. Look at the pose adopted by the figure of Cupid in the painting.
