During the Renaissance period the highest form of painting was the representation
of religious subjects. Naturally religious figures were depicted with dignity
and decorum. If an artist wished to portray nudity or sexuality he would
use figures from ancient pagan myths such as Greek or Roman gods and goddesses.
Figures such as Venus, Flora, Diana etc. appear in paintings of this period
in varying degrees of undress and themes such as sex and violence would
be explored by the depiction of ancient myths and legends.
Bronzino makes use of the figures of Venus and Cupid to explore the erotic
pleasures and follies of sensual love. |
