The use of mythological characters has allowed the artist to create an erotic and pleasurable image. The use of flesh, jewels and rich coloured fabrics suggest that the painting was for the individual enjoyment of the King.
The dominant figure, that of Venus herself, is presented as an object to be gazed at by a single male viewer. The painting was probably displayed in the King’s private apartments for his pleasure and that of other male visitors.
